GCL: A few more days

We still need a few days to finish everything critical to the release.
I won’t go into details now, let’s finish the game first and later I’ll write about how exciting these last few weeks were.
I won’t read comments or reply to them in this last few days, but after the release.
Thanks for staying with us, I hope we can all celebrate in a few days!

Few more days as in sometime this week or few more days so we’ll wait until the next Monday? Just curious, since you really seem to like Mondays šŸ˜›

    • DM x Nut says:

      ANNOYED!!!!!

      • I3loodTeeth says:

        Peter,

I know as you read all of these comments (or until you have had enough) the general mood set by a lot of people on this forum is a bit of a downer. I would just like to remind you that strangely enough these people are hard on you about release dates etc. because they can’t wait to play your next installment in the Gemcraft series. They love your stuff and can’t seem to contain themselves or keep their objectivity, don’t let the comments get to you šŸ™‚

        I3loodTeeth

  2. mk1 says:

Reminds me of PPKKII. Why don“t you just choose an realistic release date instead of letting us hope every week again and again?

    • Warmonger says:

Another week of real life! Thank you so much!

    • Wim says:

I agree.. I know these things can happen but it’s getting frustrating.. “probably a few days before 31th January” “final release date 7 feb” and now waiting again šŸ™

      • iamagemtdfanyay says:

he is working all time so we can waste our life
maybe they found a bug? its not that far from the release date

    • Florian says:

I was the first one here, who instantly said, he would love to pay a few dollars for the game… now i really have to think about that, for i must say, i get really frustrated, watching that blog from the day it was started, hearing some funny release dates every now and then, so i have to come check the blog again, only to hear, that each of the dates has been a ly..

That really is the worst promotion i have seen in a long time :/

      • Serpenz says:

Yeah just nthought the same. After being frustrated that often i will really have to think about wether to pay or not.

        This is so pathetic.

      • Kasewind says:

I agree. I really am starting to lose interest in the BS here. It’s one thing to wait for a game for a couple of months, but I arranged my days off at work so I could play tomorrow… now, I’m not so sure I want to.

        • VectorX says:

You arranged days off to play the game? You’re getting the main content free and you’re complaining about delays? True, you’ll have to pay for PREMIUM content for the game, but you can still enjoy them main gist of the game for free. Priorities?

          • Nightmares says:

Ya, I’m sure none of you will be playing it now huh? Be real. Even if they pushed it back another year or two you’re still going to try it, and if you like what you get for free will consider buying it. I’m frustrated as well and was really looking forward to getting to play it tomorrow, but if you cant see threw your frustration then dont bother posting. More drama over “they suck” for something their putting a lot of work into is pointless and childish.
–Hope to see the game soon–

      • Amanda says:

Dude I’m not happy that it’s been pushed back, quite a few times but chill out. Have you never missed a deadline in your life? Have you never had people counting on you and not come through perfectly? I understand what you’re saying and I’m not trying to belittle you. But don’t be such a jerk about it. This is a human being who has yet to make money off of this, and he’s still going. It’s one of the best made flash games I’ve ever seen, and it’s the best TD that exists.
Don’t be a jerk, just appreciate. I’m ticked it’s not released, but I’m still not an dick about it.

  3. AntiDo says:

Oh dear, I’m already tired of everything else, and was fucked up to wait till monday. And no much longer! Hope it will worth it!

  4. doug negri says:

So I guess I’ll only play GC Lab on July, my classes already started. =x

But good luck with the final touches!

  5. Amanda says:

Still ticked, but take your time. I’m an awesomely grumpy consumer.

  6. Rhalph says:

Mk1 : if you came from the programming world, you’d know that correctly picking a release date is almost always impossible šŸ™‚

    • Mi says:

      Well.
Then it would still be better to pick a later date, when you know for SURE that the game will be done by then. Like… when you THINK your game will be done in January, say “we will release it in April!”… then there won’t be so much dissapointment.

      • mk1 says:

I did not say exact, I said realistic. And If you knwe what PPKKII is then youĀ“d knew waht iI mean. ItĀ“s a manga (full name: Personal Paradise – Killer Kid part two) that should have been released on 08/26/10. It was far from being ready then, so it was postponed to 24th December 2010. It was still not ready then, so they always asked for one or two weeks more patience. By now, itĀ“s probably released in June 2011. So, what I mean is: only say a date when youĀ“re sure about it. It would have been much easier if there would have said “in 2011” and only one week before release, when the game is ready, a date ist given.

        • Amanda says:

Completely valid, I would have liked to have “coming 2011” and then when completed give a release date while they beta it and work on fixes small bugs, etc.

          • Bar Ilan says:

??? The last few dates WERE given to us a week before release. I think we should just all chill out and understand that Peter is simply bad with deadlines.

  7. xneon says:

damn, I had planned this week for GCL only, and got my dreams shattered as hell. can’t wait can’t wait can’t wait…

  10. Dan says:

Guys, programming is 75% science and 25% art. You can only predict when you will be finished and have everything working well enough for the initial release. It sounds like we will more then likely be playing the game at some point next week. Trust me, Peter wants this game out more then you do. For him no game = no money.

  11. yksane says:

    Son I am disapoint

  12. Daniel says:

While these comments reportedly won’t get read, I suggest “delaying” the release until March 1st. I know you plan to fix a ton of stuff in the version 1.1 update that will invariably happen the first week when all of us play the game, but I can’t help but feel that you’re feeling rushed to go from the end of January to one week later in February and once again a ‘few more days.’

I hope the feeling of pressure to keep your promise won’t hinder the quality of the actual game. If we’ve waited over half a year for this game we can wait another month. In any case, thanks in advance for all the fun!

    • Einfach says:

Well, this is assuming that the game is unplayable and people will be mad. People will be happy just to have something to play!!

Once he releases it, it’s easier to fix everything.

  13. Sup says:

Well everyone was begging about the approximate release date and now you’re bitching that “WE HAVE TO WAIT AGAIN”. Just let it a little more time, I rather wait another few weeks than play a buggy/incomplete early release.

  14. magiallycool says:

i find it funny, im sure it will be released by the 15th

  15. Afro says:

    OH COME ON!!!!!

I THINK IT’S NEXT MONDAY FEDBRUARY 14!!!!!! MORE WAITING!

  16. Afro says:

    I’m bored!!

  17. ezekiel says:

this is disappointing. ı know that it isn’t as easy as it seems but you should be more careful before giving an exact date. you first announced the release date as jan 31, then feb 7 and now you say ‘a few more days'(ı don’t know what to expect from such a vague expression).all these things harm your reliability and upset your loyal customer base.

  18. Afro says:

    First of all

The first release date was September 30.

Then it was postphoned to January 31.

Then again it was postphoned to February 7.

But NOW?1? Postphoned again??? I think it’s next Monday, February 14. So crazy these guys!

  19. stebbi says:

aaawwwwwwww i’ll take my holiday on this week to play…. !!! šŸ˜€

  20. Bar Ilan says:

Enough to say I’m disapointed too.
But as our comments won’t get read, and I said everything I wanted to say before, I’ll keep quiet until release.

  21. Hishnegreb says:

    Go Peter go!!!

Type code like you’ve never typed before…

Remember the faster you finish the game the sooner you become rich!

  22. Pengu says:

The funny thing is that he last wednesday (the 26th) told us that it couldn’t be ready for monday (the 31st) but that it might be for wednesday or thursday, but a realease by then would be stupid because of the weekend’s approuch.

Anyway. When you expect the game to be ready in 7-8 days and therefore release it after 12 days, then what the fuck can go wrong so you need more days?

It’s not like when you get a job and you say you cant finish it in 5 days, but 7-8 days should be fine. And the customer says, it’s okay, i just need it to be done in 12 days. Wouldn’t he get fucking fucked pissed off if he couldnt do it in 12, when he said 7-8? Seriously?

    • Bar Ilan says:

Savefiles. Either that, or real life. That’s what can go wrong. Don’t forget he Peter might have had a trouble in real life.

  23. Charles Beuttel says:

I think its the gaming industry’s fault for not giving us enough choices to be occupied until gemcraft’s release. There are very few decent tower defense games on the market and its not Peter’s fault that no other tower defense quite compares to his last hit game.

So, keep your mouth shut and apologize when the next gemcraft blows your mind! :DDDDDDDDD

    • I3loodTeeth says:

Err what about Bloons TD? #3 and #4 were almost as good as GC series, like 98% as good imho.

On a side note when I read the post about the author of gemcraft resisting giving over the source code of the game to an iphone dev due to not trusting them I seriously had to LOL. I’m sorry but in all perspective writing a 2D tower defense game is not exactly massively hard to make or replicate. Me thinks the author is putting a bit too much importance on the source code.

Back to the important stuff, really can’t wait to play this game but if you think that you can make me pay for a flash based game that will lag hard most levels most of the time past a certain point then you are dreaming. I would definitely pay for a version on iphone but not for flash, sorry buddy. Make it free on flash but with the option of paying for upgrades, kinda like what NinjaKiwi did for their games. Just my 2c worth šŸ™‚

      • Jack Frost says:

If you think it’s so easy to produce a game like GemCraft then do it yourself, and let us LOL at your efforts, clown. Can’t do it, hey? Then if you can’t even tell the difference between Bloons and GemCraft, go and play Bloons, and keep your pointless advice to yourself.

        • I3loodTeeth says:

Read two comments down and take two chill pills, you are one seriously angry person lol.

      • Lucas Muraguchi says:

“Make it free on flash but with the option of paying for upgrades”

Isn’t it what he’s already doing?

        • I3loodTeeth says:

Not sure personally, I couldn’t be bothered reading through a million posts/replies to find out exactly what is going on with this game.

      • sharp says:

Bloons TD is nowhere near as good as Gemcraft.
IMHO is the most stupid acronym in history.
You would pay for a crappy iPhone game but not for a game as amazing as GCL?
And if it’s “not exactly massively hard to make or replicate”, then go do it yourself.

        • I3loodTeeth says:

That would be a breach of copyright without the authors permission. Take a chill pill and relax sunshine.

      • Einfach says:

Now – what’s your highest score in GC0? If it’s less than 50 Million, then you have no right to say BTD is better.

        • I3loodTeeth says:

I laugh at your broken logic šŸ˜€ I also laugh at your comment, clearly shows you do not read my whole post. I never said Bloons TD was better. I really wish people would take more care in their responses, and not bother writing ridiculous comments like what I have had to reply to now about three times. This is ridiculous guys seriously grow up.

        • I3loodTeeth says:

OK just to shut you up I have clocked all the previously mentioned games (bloons td 3+4 as well as both gemcraft games) and I have thoroughly played through all the games as well. Just to give you a little indicator as to how much I used to play Gemcraft Chapter 0, my highest score for the final level was 11,769,188. I’m not competing for the highest score but with that score I think you can safely assume that I have lots of experience playing the game. There, happy now? Does the pointless numbers make you happy Einfach?

  24. geir says:

    Seriously, piss off Peter.
I’m not spending another second waiting for this shit. If you can’t even be professional enough about the release dates how can you possibly expect people to actually pay you for this crap?

    Go DIAF.

    • Jack Frost says:

This comment is disgusting, and so many others here are not very much better. These pathetic morons have been playing Peter’s brilliant free games for months or years, yet they feel entitled to whinge and moan and be abusive towards him because they think they’ve been inconvenienced by missed release dates.

Peter, you have my sympathy. I suggest in future it might be better to avoid release date announcements altogether. Then you won’t have to deal with so many childish brats who think that you owe them something, rather than the other way around.

      • George says:

TOtally agree with jack. Geir you are a moronic idiot. Just because you didnt get the game when you wanted it you whinge and be abusive for no reason. Its a game and its better to be right then to be bugged.

Keep up the amazing work peter!

    • Einfach says:

      Was this sarcastic?

    • iamagemtdfanyay says:

      gtfo
if you don’t like the game, don’t play it
      then we other 19.999.999 will

  25. celestior says:

    hello,

just let them finish they prolly found some bug that are annoying and should waste the pleasure of the game…

    so stay patient
and wait few days in more !

    peter cheer !

  26. Devil says:

I was decided to buy the game. Now I’ll really not support it. I think that delay is too big to waste my time with waiting. Going to play something else and gonna play GCL sometime in summer when game will be free (if it will be released).

    • Carl says:

Devil (And everyone else who is withdrawing your support),

Give some serious thought to your statements. You’re going to not get the full version of the game since Peter asked for a THIRD extension, and a short one at that?

Is this Duke Nukem Forever? NO! That took 13 years! The total time that GCL is being pushed back can be measured in days and weeks! Have some patience, have some tolerance, and have some common sense. Peter doesn’t spend every waking moment coding for this game. Nor is is he forcing you to support it.

      • Bar Ilan says:

        No support=No game.
Just what are you trying to prove?

      • Devil says:

I’ve spend lots of hours only waiting. Don’t have more time to waste. I’m playing games for 25 years and time learned me to not wait. There are milion games I’d like to play and finish. My plan was to play GCL as fast as possible coz there are more games on my list. So after next GCL delay I decided to push it down. Agree me or not. Every wasted day is good for nothing and my days are getting short.

        • Bar Ilan says:

It just means you need to do something else except playing games. Go read a book, or watch CNN. Or even make your own game.

    • Peter plain old says:

Guys guys GUYS! WTF is the problem? A few days – a few weeks – jesus fucking CHRIST it is not the end of the world, nor is Peter doing anything wrong. For those who booked time off work – read a book! or climb an accessible mountain! Do something different – productive – instead of whining.

The game is almost here. I’d say patience is a virtue but it isn’t that – just GROW THE HELL UP!

Peter’s games are quality. It obviously doesn’t happen over-night. As some other posters mentioned, it isn’t an exact science. Anything artistic can’t be, by definition. There is more to life that Gemcraft – as I’m sure Peter now is only too painfully aware. I can confidently say that the game will be excellent, but only if it’s released when it’s ready. Nobody wants a rushed game – look at the majority of the ‘AAA’ titles released – buggy, thrown-together clap-trap.

Right. Rant over. I know there are plenty of decent rational posters here too, and indeed, plenty of patient rational people simply WAITING. As excited as I am about this game, I pity anyone who cannot catch a grip of reality long enough to understand things as they are. And this, guys, is nothing really.

      • Vesper says:

hehe, if there will be the end of the world within the next seven days, they will still complain about AHHH WE HAVEN’T RECEIVED GCL!!!!11

        • Einfach says:

          Brilliant ^

        • Carl says:

I think the same people bitching about waiting a few more days would be complaining about how impressive the end of the world will be. “Oh, THAT city just fell into a hole in the ground, I thought it would be cooler if it exploded, but I guess that the universe didn’t want to take the time to code that in. How DARE the universe not consider my personal feelings when preparing this?!”

          • Vesper says:

we don’t yet know what will exactly happen when the end of the worls will actually come. It might be as silent as dying while asleep, just you will suddenly see the God before you saying “Hello”, or it might be as disastrous as real-life implementation of “2012” combined with what happened at the point of dinosaurs’ extinction. But, that’s sure no one’s personal preference will actually be counted when it will happen.

  27. Mattsingen says:

Release the game when you think it’s ready. I’ll play it when it’s released and I’ll pay for the full version if nothing catastrophic happens to my economy.
I usually try most of the new games on armorgames I can fill my spare time until GCL is released.
Thank you Peter for your effort in trying to please us.

  28. Dayle says:

Have to laugh at all this whining. It’s great to know the biggest problem in most people’s lives here is a game being delayed a few days. I’ll gladly trade my problems for this one!

Take your time, Peter – I know the game will be well worth the wait and my $5-10 for the full version. For everyone here that’s bitching, you’ll have a dozen or more people that actually appreciate all you do and will let you know. People rarely comment to praise anything, but they waste no time commenting to whine. Just remember that!

  29. just be thankful you guys know that he has one almost done. better than waiting two years like halo or something (i truly do NOT know the story of halo and their delay (if there even was one)) but please be respectful. my english is bad.

    sorry <3

  30. pbhead says:

  31. tommmmmm says:

hmmm I read half the comments. Peter is this really what you want? So many disappointed people? I can’t just figure out how this makes stuff better for you. I hope it does and it’s all some marketing trick I yet have to understand.

    • matt says:

yep ,you’re right ,releasing a bugged game surely would not disapoin people

      • sharp says:

Yep, it wouldn’t. This is why people always want to play beta releases. To take an unrelated example, the Firefox 4 Beta is way better and faster than the old firefox despite it’s small bugs.
GCL would be way better than GC0 or GC1 even if he released it right now. It wiuld also speed up the finding and fixing of the bugs, making an unbugged build happen a lot quicker.
The only reason this could be wrong is if there are still “game not working at all” bugs, which if he is still getting at this stage in development, he really shouldn’t be telling us it will be released soon.

    • Spooky says:

yeah cuz him releasing a game that isn’t finished is definitely a better idea… its a marketing trick…

    even though i’m also disapointed

shut up people, hes got a reason for that .
now go grab the few dollars you will need!

about the delays ,well, it always worked for blizzard šŸ˜€

    • Devil says:

Blizzard is chapter itself. They make best games but their rumors and “fuelling fire” is only commercial move. While you are waiting for something from Blizzard you are just wasting time. They will release something only when they want. It is better to do your own work and when it comes then go for it. It is always better not to trust release dates. Modern trend is to keep people waiting for something. It is only up to us if we accept it or not. Me not. Rather do not trust than be dissapointed.

    • Kakko says:

matt, at least with Diablo games, Blizzard says, “It will be done when it’s done”. There are no broken promises because no promises are made.

I don’t care that the game is delayed, but I don’t like broken promises and I hate excuses. They are unnecessary. Peter is an experienced programmer but he lacks PR skills.

If the people on this board were the people most likely to pay for the game and now Peter has alienated them, he has hurt himself more than anything else.

Peter, please learn how to market a product. Please do not over promise. Please understand why the people here are upset. We are your fans. We came here to learn about your product. We desired to market your product to our friends and colleagues out of loyalty. We wanted for you to succeed, but when you break promises to us like this, our loyalty to you and your product waivers. Your product is a conduit through which we have a relationship with you. As with any relationship, breaking promises and leading the other person on will lead them eventually to break up with you. I WAS planning to pay for the game but why should I be supporting, subsidizing, and patronizing somebody who doesn’t respect me? That is how the people of this board feel right now.

      • Spooky says:

Peter has made most of our favorite flash games… why does he need to be a marketing expert give him props for what he can do, don’t discredit him because he can’t market that well, its just stupid

        • sharp says:

He needs to be able to market decently because he is trying to sell his game and actually make good money, to an audience that have previously got his content for free.

“broken promises”, “excuses”, “loyalty”, “respect”, “relationship”? Dude, relax already. Like you said it will be done when its done.

    • Kasewind says:

This is why I don’t play Blizzard games anymore.

      • Warmonger says:

I would rather play a good game later than new crappy releases every week. Quality over quantity!

Also, as a amateur game developer myself, I know that you can code them forever and they never get finished.

        • Kasewind says:

I didn’t say a thing when Q3 turned into Q4 turned into January 31… but when you make a trailer and announce the release date on 3rd party blogs, it’s time to live up to the deadline.

The issue isn’t Peter needing more time, it’s Peter needing to be realistic. When I see a post with a set date on the armorblog and a video circulating on Youtube, I expect that the programmer has his stuff together enough to be confident in the date.

Even then, I didn’t moan the first time he missed the deadline… but now? Now, it seems as if he isn’t in control of his product.

          • Matthew M says:

            *sigh*
agreed about the trailer… …and the rest

          • Vesper says:

there was no Q3 if you read properly. There was only site relaunch announced in Q3, and this was the promise he fulfilled. Careful man.

    >I think it’s next Monday, February 14

Releasing on Valentine’s Day is probably not a good move.

  38. Robert says:

I wonder how long it will actually be. I was just getting ready for it. Got my paypal working today just to make sure. šŸ™‚

  39. Etana says:

While it would be nice if GCL was done by now, I really don’t feel as if the delay is that big of a deal. Gemcraft games are well made and worth the wait. For those of you who are threatening to recind your support because of the delay, all I have to say is that you are too obsessed with games and should read a book or watch a show where you can learn about the world you live in. It may surprise you, but there are actually interesting things going on in the world.

Also, I just wanted to say that I’m sure that not everyone who is disappointed in the delay needs the above advice. If I had tried to get a day of work so that I could play a game, and then found out the release date had been moved, I would be ticked to.

    • George says:

I agree with most of that, apart from if your taking a day off work then that is a little too obsessed haha! Its best just to let the game take its time, quality not a rushed pile of bugs! šŸ™‚

  40. Alonzo says:

You know what? I had a horridly bad week and i was waiting for GC to come out and make it all better. I’m in marketing and management. So I know how much time management on a project like this can be difficult. to be honest a project is never finished there is just the point that it stops being worked on. Wow is a perfect example of this. It has been almost continually updated for the last six years and It’s still not done. from what I understand, he’s planning to work on it after it is released. I’m glad about that. I can’t wait for GC4.

I agree with a lot of you. I’m unhappy about the delay as well. However, he has proven to make a good game so no matter how long it takes, I’m still with him. Those that are like, I’m not going to pay for this becuase he keeps pushing the release date back are stupid because it means a better game when it does come out. To be honest, I hope that when I make a game it will be half as good as the ones he has made.

P.S. If he ever needs a marketing guy, I’d be more then willing to help out.

    • sharp says:

He definitely needs a marketing guy, i think the right time would have been weeks ago though.

  41. Justin says:

I completely understand that things don’t always go as planned, so I won’t complain about the delay. I’ll enjoy it when it finally does come out šŸ™‚

I do hope paying players get a downloadable version, though!

  42. blunt says:

the problem with programming is you never know when its done…or like alonzo said its more likely never done.
there can be a minor bug(==> releasedate), you fix it and suddenly things don’t work (good) together anymore.
or maybe its not a bug just changes in monster, gem or tower stats(and this guys, takes time…its like 10 times testing and a minor change. and again 10 times testing, if the change applies correctly).

i’m glad that peter takes his time to give it a good start.
i love gc and gc0 and can’t wait for gcl, but give him time you don’t want a game that doesn’t work, especially when you pay for it (e.g. civ V).

looking forward on gcl, i know there will be near to 0 spare time for me in the week its released!
take your time, and don’t listen to those bashers who don’t know a thing about programming.
    (“MOMMY I WANT THAT!…NOW!!!”)

  43. James says:

A lot of you are being extremely overdramatic. You claim you want him to release a game full of bugs and errors, probably some errors that makes the game almost entirely unplayable, and then juts fix it later. This is not a Windows operating system, he’s not going to release a crappy version full of things that will go wrong, he wants to perfect his game before it is release and fix any minor things that may pop up along the way, I got a lot of respect for the guy, he takes a boring concept like a TD game, and transforms it into one of the greatest games I have ever played. You all need to stop whining about waiting one more week to play a video game. Its only a game, get a life people!! You claim to be fans of this game but as soon as a delay is mentioned you’ll bash on Peter like there is no tomorrow. I’m glad there is a delay, it means if he did release the game tomorrow, it wouldn’t work. Keep up the good work Peter! I can’t wait to see your next project after this one!!!!

  44. sharp says:

Half of the people here do not understand what the other half is complaining about. They are not complaining that the game is taking longer to finish, but are complaining that Peter didn’t have the sense to say that he didn’t know when he’d finish it. Instead, he just set a release date that he couldn’t keep. And then he did it again. At least after he wasn’t ready by the 31st he could have said it will be a while longer.

    • Matthew M says:

The other half is complaining about this:
-Peter not keeping a release date
      -that he promised them
-even though he told us *several times* that he *won’t* give one
-and provided *strong reasons why not to* (his exact words buried somewhere within the previous posts)
      -but eventually did give one
-because you guys were BUGGING HIM FOR ONE EVER SINCE HE MENTIONED GCL BACK IN JULY!!!!

Peter *told* us (deriving from his posts, at least) that the game will be ready *when it will be ready*. Why exactly was that not enough? So that you guys can now flame him?!
I’m disappointed too, but first of all, this is mostly our own fault because we were asking for the release date (or should I say, some of you did), and second, complaining won’t get the game out any sooner.

(edit: this goes to all the whiners here, not necessarily to the above poster)

      • nply says:

Saying a release date really makes us think there is a good plan towards it.

A serious game/app/software like this should have a detailed plan from designing to implementing, to testing, etc. A “GCL back in July” would really mean a release day, it is normal that people will definitely be attracted and ask for it.

Why make a promise about the release day just because people are flaming for it? If you don’t really have one then don’t say it like you really mean it. At least people know it is being worked on, it’s fine. It’s normal to lose players who do not have not that much patience. Just simply let us know you are working towards it. Just say you are not certain!

      • sharp says:

“Peter *told* us (deriving from his posts, at least) that the game will be ready *when it will be ready*.”
        I think that
“Exact release date: Let’s say January 31.”
        was pretty clear, as was
“GCL release date: one more week -> 2011.Feb.07.”
the only time he said it will be ready when it’s ready was back on the 10th of december. Heck, the post after that he said it will probably be earlier than jan 31st.
So do your research before you accuse of of “flaming” and “whining”. Who was bugging him? A release date that you have no intention of keeping should never be set for any reason.
It’s not Jan 31st i’m angry about. That was set a month before, with plenty that could go wrong. It’s the Feb 7th date that annoys me. A week. These dates were personal goals he was setting, that he should never have released to his fans.

        • Matthew M says:

@sharp: maybe I got carried away a bit..

I didn’t mean anything personal, it was the – somewhat constant – attitude of that “other half” that pissed me.
(I wanted to address everyone, but then I replied at your post because it had the “halves” inside.. I’m sorry about that..)

I’ve been following (at least reading) this blog ever since the site relaunched on July 1st.
As far as I can remember, ever since Peter said they’re working on GCL, there often happened to be folks who were asking when does it come out (apparently without reading through previous posts/comments, where the answer was (still) “we don’t know”).
Not all the time, but still often enough to make me think “wait, hasn’t he answered that already?” Well, at least I was annoyed by it – and I’m just a guy waiting for the game.

Thus, although I don’t know why Peter did decide to give out a fixed release date after all, I do believe (judging from myself) that he felt pressure from rather constant asking – and (with best intention of keeping his word) said to himself “alright, I think we can finish by then”. And then made it public.
(As to what went wrong after that, I don’t have a clue.)

I’m sure we’re all disappointed, but the ‘not reading -> asking over and over -> loudly “can’t wait”-ing (not that bad, but still rather too often) -> (the biggest problem) loudly & angrily complaining when not “served”‘ attitude – from several people here – eventually pissed me off.

Again, sorry for any misunderstanding and for the majority of my anger pouring atop your post.

  45. hamster says:

    STFU!
Don’t you have anything better to do, but waiting for some flash game?!
Just get a life, get out more, meet your friends, girlfriends… the game came to you out of nowhere.

  46. Numbat says:

I’d rather have to wait a bit for the game than not have it at all.

  47. Simone says:

    Damn! I can’t wait anymore !!!

  48. rlon says:

    Haha, seriously?
To all the people, claiming, they couldn’t wait anymore. What did you do in the past weeks? Nothing but sitting home and waiting for the release? It is a game. And it will be released. So just wait and enjoy in then. It’s nothing your life depends one, come on…

    • Devil says:

Okay from new year I was playing a few PS3 games, Diablo 2 and a few of flash games. Now I’ve ben waiting, playing only flash games but next delay pushes me to finally run Oblivion tham Final Fantasy XIII, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1 and 2, Sacred 2 and so on. As you can see I’m in little slip. So no more waiting.

  49. derparific says:

    Quoted from an earlier post:

“If I said February, then we would be struggling at the end of Feb, and so on, so let’s try to keep January at (almost) all costs.”

It seems he’s doing exactly what he said he didn’t want to do. Set a hard release date and release trash, or don’t set a release date at all. it’s that simple.

  50. nply says:

Yeah I know it’s very painful correcting these and those when bugs come up. I will definitely support the GemCraft series because it’s nice. We are *not* complaining about the long waiting time since the last episode – we know it’s hard to design such a complehensive game, or about numerous programming bugs that pop up from nowhere. It is that you made a promise *twice* about the release day and you broke both. It’s perfectly okay that it needs some more time checking and testing. But there is at least a timeline for each and every game, and app, and whatever plan. Planning, designing, implementing, testing, etc. Every program/app is not bullet-proof, there ought to be some bugs. I don’t mean those can be ignored but at least there are big issues or big bugs to fix and after that it could be out (provided you think everything thoroughly) – this is real life. For those who mentioned about programming, I don’t think it is still time for programming just one or two weeks before the release date. And I don’t understand why there is something critical to finish off but still you think there is time to play Dead Space 2. Something critical is okay, but don’t make a promise about the date.

    • Vesper says:

well, any plan could be broken if by some streak of bad luck you have just encountered a weird bug that has high potential of inducing the computer’s misbehavior. I don’t expect you releasing a software that can crash while not saving your work if you press several buttons in a certain order. Also, the bigger the project and the smaller the dev team, the more probable is the deviation of the plans to release the project.

Perhaps Peter has just found a huge black beetle in the far corner spawning lesser ones. This takes time to find a proper weapon to swat that one.

      • sharp says:

If he’s still getting bugs like that, we are either nowhere near the day we will actually be able to play it, or your exaggerating because… why? Why defend him anymore?
-Consistent failure to live up to release dates.
-Hilariously bad PR and marketing skills
-Weak excuses about no beta being released
        -Practically no playtesting before release

I say set a release date of about march sometime. Be realistic.

        • Jack Frost says:

Sharp, you stupid little troll, just STFU and mind your own business. Peter Hargitai is a superstar.

        • Vesper says:

last late-night fix or a playtesting modification can cause a crashful of bugs just because of a human mind incoherence. Bugs like this can appear any time, on any level of coding, if you change a working code to add something, you can induce bugs. One has to live with that, and test any changes he does to the code.

          Now.
Consistent failure? I want you personaly to build a house, I have land for it. You give me a release date (I demand it from you). Will you succeed in building the house prior to the deadline? Remember, you only have yourself to build it, no hirelings.
PR and marketing skills? This is not a project to require marketing, this stuff is for way bigger software.
No beta? You should know that SWF is reversable code, so this kind of protection is normal. After all, he has to release the game first on AG, and he doesn’t want this release to be bugged, and any beta that appears anywhere will violate this agreement.
No playtesting? Do you know everything, huh?

          Result: Your Epic Fail.
